Homeschool Journey

 Hey Everybody,

    My name is Melanie. Let me start by saying I love homeschool. Whatever your reasons for choosing to homeschool, my hope is that this blog and my videos will help you feel supported in your decision to homeschool.  I was homeschooled for 8 years of my life, now as a young mom I have started down the journey of homeschooling my kids. 

    As I talk to homeschool moms I run into common concerns, such as "I don't know if I have the patience" "I'm not sure I'm educated enough to homeschool my kids" or "I'm worried about my kids not having the social aspect of school" First off let me say that if some of these thoughts are running through your head, your not alone. Second if you are having concerns about homeschool, that says to me that you want to get it right and that you care. I firmly believe that if you have a desire to homeschool that any concerns you have, have a solution. I'm proud of your love and desire to teach your children.

    This blog and videos is to help you realize we are all in the same boat. We are all learning how to be teacher and mom. As I share ideas, crafts, and tips with you I will also share the REAL life stuff. I'm by no means perfect and I'm on this homeschool journey with you. I will end with this thought, you know your child better than anyone else so you have the knowledge of what they need and how they learn. Use that knowledge to bless your children's life.

Needs vs Wants

 One of the Social Studies standards for Kindergarten is learning needs vs wants. It is a simple concept to teach. What things do we need to stay alive versus what are nice things to have but that we don't need.  The activity I chose to do with this standard is the following. I cut a big piece of paper from our roll of paper. (Side note: buy a roll of paper for project and crafts, I ordered a roll of white paper for fairly cheap on Amazon) Then I gave my kindergartener a few kid magazines (The Friend) we had laying around the house. We opened up the magazines and she looked for pictures of food, toys, water, etc. She cut out the images she wanted. I wrote on the big piece of paper needs vs wants. My Kindergartener then took the images she cut out and glued them to either needs or wants. 2 Kids : 1 Teacher

Homeschooling a Preschooler and a Kindergartner at the same time has been one of the most challenging factors thus far for me. Now I know there are a ton of moms out there that do more than two kids so please leave comments about what you do to help all of us grow together. Here are a few things I have learned that help in my home. My Preschooler wants to be involved no matter what we are doing so I have learned that I have to plan ahead a little better and either have an activity for him to do next to us at the table or find a way to simplify the lesson for him.   Another thing that has worked for us is letting my Kindergartener be the teacher. It makes my Preschooler more excited about learning and helps my Kindergartener review concepts she has already learned.  The last thing that has worked for us but that is still a work in progress is raising our hands.
